I decided to frame up six of these 5x7 works in paper for their month-long exhibit at @chezmallo! The frames are actually 14”x11” and I love the look of them with a nice wide mat like this. I also float mounted them, which means they are not displayed behind a mat, but instead have all the edges exposed overtop. It’s my favourite way to frame hand-torn papers! 😍

Here are some more framing ideas for these new 5x7s! Check out yesterday’s reel for more ideas. Can’t wait to see how you all frame these pieces… the options are endless!

1 + 2 - These are the “Gallery” picture frames with mat from CB2. I love a large frame with these small pieces because it makes a bigger statement on the wall!
3 - Simple and modern, also with a nice wide mat to offset the painting very nicely.
4 - White on white.
5 - Standard black frame with white mat.
6 + 7 - Ornate gold with no mat—so fun!
8 - Blue frame with white mat.

HOT TIP: If you want to DIY but you can’t find a larger frame with a small picture opening, you can get a mat custom cut at a framing store fairly inexpensively.

See how they turned out! I’m selling this new collection of 5x7 pieces UNFRAMED, so if you’re a DIYer like me, I thought you could use some fresh inspo. What do you think? Do these spark any ideas for you?

TIPS:

- Choose glass instead of plastic - protects the artwork and looks more professional.

- Black is more anchoring, lighter colours (gold, white, woodgrain) create a lighter/airy feel.

-A WIDE mat creates a beautiful statement (and also fills more space on your wall because the frame is bigger)!

- It’s fun to reveal the deckled paper edge—try attaching the painting over the mat rather than under, or opt for a floating frame.

- Have a beautiful frame but the wrong size mat? You can get a mat cut in any size at a framing store.

- Mix and match frames for a fun gallery wall that oozes personality.

I collected these frames from Winners, Homesense, Michaels, Amazon, DeSerres, and my own stash. A couple frames didn’t come with mats, so I bought them for $5 each.
